Everyone wants to help at Christmas, and that’s the catch. Shelters and community meals get flooded with offers for December 25, while the weeks around it run short on hands. If you’ve ever called a food bank in mid-December and heard “we’re all booked,” you know the feeling.
There’s still plenty of need this season. It comes down to timing, knowing where to look and having a backup plan. This guide covers all three, plus projects you can run with your family, class, team or office.
To volunteer during Christmas, pick the kind of help you want to give and contact two or three local groups by early November. Ask which dates they still need. Stay flexible on the date. Many groups need more help in early December and the week after Christmas than on the holiday itself.
Here’s the order that works:
| When | What to Do | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| September to October | Research local groups and ask about their holiday needs | Programs with applications or training need lead time |
| Early November | Book group shifts and any Christmas Day shifts | Holiday shifts and large group slots often fill first |
| Late November to mid December | Help with toy drives, gift sorting, wrapping and deliveries | This is the busiest stretch for gift and coat programs |
| Christmas Eve and Christmas Day | Serve meals, drive delivery routes or visit residents | Spots are limited and usually booked weeks ahead |
| December 26 through January | Restock shelves, sort leftover donations and serve meals | Volunteers drop off after the holidays, but the need stays |
👉 You can organize your own event
It might seem daunting, but planning you own volunteer event is easier than you think. A simple sign up sheet can help organize people around a cause you care about.
Learn more about how Sign Ups workOn Christmas Day, the most common places to volunteer are community meals, shelters, meal delivery programs, hospitals and senior living communities, and animal shelters. Spots are limited, so call by early November. If the day is full, ask to be put on a backup list.
| Where | What You Might Do | Good to Know |
|---|---|---|
| Community meals and soup kitchens | Cook, serve, set up tables and clean up | The most requested Christmas Day shift. If it's full, ask about December 24 or 26. |
| Homeless and family shelters | Serve meals, run kids' activities and hand out gifts | Many set a minimum age and a cap on group size. |
| Meal delivery programs | Drive routes that bring meals to homebound seniors | Regular drivers often travel for the holiday, so routes need cover. |
| Hospitals and senior living | Visit residents, deliver cards and sing carols | Usually need approval in advance, and some have age rules. |
| Animal shelters | Walk dogs, clean kennels and keep cats company | Staff run thin on holidays. Most ask you to attend an orientation first. |
| Churches and community centers | Help host a free community meal or gift giveaway | Many welcome help from the wider community, not just members. |
Christmas Eve works the same way. Meals and shelter events are popular, and spots go early. Meal delivery and animal shelters tend to have more room.
If every spot near you is booked, you still have options:
👉 Not sure which groups are near you? Start with your local food bank, which often needs help all season and can point you to partner pantries and meal programs. You can also call or visit 211 to find community groups in your area.
Kids can help at Christmas. The trick is matching the job to their age, because many volunteer sites set a minimum. Call ahead before you load everyone into the car.
| Age | Good Fits | Keep in Mind |
|---|---|---|
| Under 6 | Drawing cards, decorating cookie boxes, picking a toy to donate | Keep it short. Thirty focused minutes is a win. |
| 6 to 11 | Packing kits at home, caroling at senior living, sorting at kid-friendly pantries | Many food banks set a minimum age, so check first. |
| 12 to 15 | Serving meals with a parent, walking shelter dogs, wrapping gifts for a toy drive | Ask if a parent needs to stay on site the whole time. |
| 16 and up | Hospital and senior living programs, delivery routes with an adult driver, leading a project | Some programs let teens serve on their own with a signed waiver. |
A few family ideas that work well:
Genius Tip
Sponsoring a family with grandparents, cousins or neighbors? Use Group Gifts to let everyone chip in online toward the wish list. One person shops, and nobody has to chase payments over text.
See how Group Gifts workGroup volunteering takes more planning, but you get more done. Most sites want large groups booked early, so treat November as your deadline.
Keep projects inside the school day so you don’t have to arrange rides.
Teams already show up together, which makes them great for hands-on shifts.
Office groups are the first to fill December group shifts, so book early.
Starting a bigger program? Here’s how to start a company community service program.
When every shift is booked, or your schedule is packed, run your own project. These don’t need a host site on the day. Before you collect anything, ask the group you’re giving to what they need. A pile of the wrong items creates work for them.
Shelters hand out hygiene kits all winter, and they’re easy to pack with a group of any age.
Cold weather hits hardest in December and January, and warm gear is always needed.
Many residents get few visitors over the holidays. A handwritten card is a small thing that lands.
Nurses, firefighters, dispatchers and grocery workers often work the holiday while everyone else is home.
Older neighbors and people with limited mobility can struggle in winter. A small crew can cover a whole street.
Covering one family’s holiday wish list is a great project for a class, office or group of families.
Most group volunteer days go wrong in the same places: too many people, too few people, or the right people at the wrong time. A simple timeline covers most of it.

How to Share Your Sign Up and Maximize ParticipationHow do I volunteer during Christmas?
Choose the kind of help you want to give, then contact two or three local groups by early November. Ask which dates they still need, whether there’s a minimum age and what paperwork they require. Be open to dates in early December or the week after Christmas, when many groups are short on help.
Where can I volunteer on Christmas Day?
Common options include community meals, homeless and family shelters, meal delivery programs for seniors, hospitals, senior living communities and animal shelters. To find groups near you, check your local food bank or 211, which connects people to community services in most US areas. Most Christmas Day spots fill weeks ahead, so call early and ask to join a waitlist if the day is booked.
What should I do if every Christmas Day volunteer spot near me is full?
Ask to be put on a waitlist, since cancellations are common. Offer to help on December 23, 24 or 26 instead. You can also run your own project, like packing hygiene kits or delivering treats to holiday shift workers.
Can my kids volunteer with me at Christmas?
Yes, but many sites set a minimum age, often for safety reasons. Younger kids do well with projects at home, like making cards or packing kits. Teens can often serve meals, walk shelter dogs or wrap gifts alongside a parent.
How early should I sign up to volunteer for Christmas?
Aim for early November for holiday shifts and group slots. If the program needs an application, training or a background check, start in September or October, since those steps can take a few weeks.
I want to organize a Christmas volunteer day for my office. Where do I start?
Call the host site in early November to confirm a date and group size. Then open a sign up with a slot limit that matches their cap, so you don’t bring too many people. Send reminders the week before and share the final headcount with the host.
Can I volunteer on Christmas Eve?
Yes. Shelters, community meals and meal delivery programs often need help on Christmas Eve. Like Christmas Day, these spots go fast, so book early.
Do I need a background check to volunteer at Christmas?
It depends on the site. Places that serve children, hospitals and senior living communities often require one, along with an application or short training. Food pantries and one-day events usually don’t. Ask when you first reach out.
